The Cuban Cigars Guide

Most "Cuban" cigars sold to tourists and online are fakes. The actual Cuban cigar industry is in production crisis. Here is what you need to know before you buy.

The current state of Cuban cigars

Habanos S.A. (the state-affiliated distributor) is in active production crisis as of 2026. Hurricane damage to Vuelta Abajo, fertilizer shortages, and aging Cuban infrastructure mean Cuban cigar production is at its lowest point in decades. Allocation to global markets is shrinking. Prices have doubled at LCDH stores in the past three years.

What this means: authentic Cuban cigars are getting harder to find, more expensive, and less consistent. Many serious smokers are shifting to Nicaraguan and Honduran alternatives that match Cuban quality at lower prices.

How to buy authentic Cubans

The only reliable channels are La Casa del Habano (LCDH) franchise stores, duty-free shops at major international airports, and direct purchases at the airport in Havana. Anything else (online, "Cuban cigars" at corner shops, "Cuban" cigars in Mexico tourist zones) is high counterfeit risk.

LCDH stores exist in Mexico City, Cancun, London, Madrid, Hong Kong, Singapore, and ~150 other cities. None in the US (legal prohibition on importation).

The 12 main Cuban brands

Cohiba (premium, often counterfeited), Montecristo (the largest brand, classics), Romeo y Julieta (mid-tier accessible), Partagas (full-bodied), H. Upmann (mild and creamy), Hoyo de Monterrey (mild to medium), Bolivar (full-bodied), Punch (medium), Por Larrañaga (boutique), Sancho Panza (medium), Trinidad (premium boutique), Vegueros (mild value).

Outside these 12, anything labeled "Cuban" is either an export brand from elsewhere using the marketing or counterfeit.

Authentication basics

Check the box: factory code (3 letters + numbers, bottom of box) and date code (3 letters indicating month + year + factory). Verify against published Habanos S.A. data. Check the bands: Cuban bands have specific embossing, hologram patterns, and font weights. Check the cigar: triple cap, specific construction quality.

For high-value purchases, professional authentication services exist. Worth the $30-50 fee for any single cigar over $100 or any box over $400.

Common questions

Are Cuban cigars actually better?
Sometimes. Top Habanos can be exceptional. But many Cuban cigars are inconsistent due to production issues. Top Nicaraguan cigars (Padrón 1964/1926, My Father Le Bijou, Liga Privada) match or exceed Cuban quality at lower price.
Is it legal for Americans to buy Cuban cigars?
Personal possession is legal. Importation into the US is restricted. Buying abroad and consuming abroad is straightforward; bringing them back is regulated.
How much does a real Cuban cigar cost?
At LCDH, single Cubans range from $15 (basic Hoyo or Partagas Petit Corona) to $80+ (Cohiba Behike, vintage Montecristo). Counterfeit "Cubans" are often $5-10, which is itself a giveaway.
